Any individual, business, or organization that has been the victim of a federal crime is eligible for our assistance services. This includes victims of financial fraud, cybercrime, human trafficking, domestic terrorism, identity theft, and public corruption. There is no income requirement and all services are provided at no cost to eligible victims.
Recovery timelines vary significantly depending on the nature and complexity of the crime. Simple identity theft cases can often be resolved within 3–6 months, while complex financial fraud cases involving international assets may take 12–36 months. Your assigned victim advocate will provide regular case updates and realistic timelines specific to your situation.
Yes. All victim information is protected under federal law, including the Crime Victims' Rights Act (CVRA) and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) where applicable. Your identity and case details are never shared with media or non-essential parties without your explicit written consent. Internal case files are classified and access-controlled.
U.S. citizens and permanent residents victimized by federal crimes abroad may be eligible for assistance. The FBI maintains legal attaché offices (Legats) in over 60 countries that can coordinate international victim support. Contact our hotline or submit an online request to determine your eligibility based on your specific circumstances.

While we cannot guarantee full recovery in every case, our forensic specialists achieve full or partial recovery in approximately 63% of financial crime cases where we are involved. Factors affecting recovery include the speed of reporting, the location of assets, and international cooperation. Acting quickly significantly improves the likelihood of a successful recovery.
